ChatGPT 6 Explained: Astra vs Sol vs Luna (Free vs Paid)

GPT-6 Explained: Astra vs Sol vs Luna, Free vs Paid

GPT-6 is not one model. It is a family of three: Astra for the hardest work, Sol for paid ChatGPT plans, and Luna for free and Go users. Here is which one you actually get, what changed, and why OpenAI quietly scrapped a fourth.

  • Quick answer: Free and Go users get Luna, paid plans get Sol, and Astra is OpenAI’s most capable model.
  • Who it’s for: anyone who uses ChatGPT and wants to know what changed in October 2026.

What is GPT-6?

GPT-6 is OpenAI’s newest generation of language models, the technology behind ChatGPT. Instead of shipping a single model, OpenAI released it as a family, each member tuned for a different balance of power, speed and cost.

Think of it like a phone line-up. The Pro model has every feature, the regular model is what most people buy, and the lite model is fast and cheap. Astra, Sol and Luna play those three roles.

The rollout happened in three steps. Astra arrived first on 3 September 2026 for a limited group of organisations. Sol and Luna followed on 22 September for work tools and developers. Then, on 7 October, the new family became the default for everyday chats in ChatGPT.

GPT-6 Astra: the flagship

Astra is the most capable member of the family and the base that Sol and Luna are built from. OpenAI first released it on 3 September 2026 in a limited preview, starting with organisations in its cybersecurity programme, then widened access to paid ChatGPT plans, the API and Amazon’s cloud.

It is also the most expensive. Reports put its API price at about $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, roughly five times what Google charges for its new Gemini 4 Argon at launch pricing. For a normal ChatGPT user, Astra is not something you need to chase. Its value shows up in long coding jobs, research and AI agents that work for hours on their own.

GPT-6 Sol: the paid ChatGPT default

Sol is the workhorse. OpenAI describes Sol and Luna as models that carry most of Astra’s strengths into something faster and cheaper to run at scale. In OpenAI’s ChatGPT release notes, Sol is listed as the chat model for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise from 7 October.

For developers, the bigger story is price. OpenAI says Sol and Luna cost 50% less in the API than the promotional prices of the GPT-5.6 models they replace. Its guidance is simple: use Sol for complex coding and agent workflows, and Luna for focused, high-volume jobs.

One more name to know: on 29 September OpenAI added GPT-6.1 Sol to ChatGPT Work and Codex, starting with Pro users. It improves on Sol for agentic coding, computer use and professional work. It is not the model in the normal Chat tab.

GPT-6 Luna: what free ChatGPT users get

Luna is the model most people will actually use. From 8 October 2026, ChatGPT Free and Go users started receiving Luna as their default chat model. Before that, from 22 September, Free and Go users could already try Luna in the ChatGPT desktop app.

Do not read “lite” as “weak”. In the GPT-6 Sol and Luna announcement, OpenAI claims that Luna at its highest effort setting beats the older GPT-5.6 Sol at medium effort, at about one tenth of the cost. That is OpenAI’s own benchmark claim, so treat it as a promise to test, not a proven fact.

For India, this matters more than the flagship news. Most Indian ChatGPT users are on the free plan or the low-cost Go plan, so Luna is the version that millions of Indians will judge the whole family by.

What’s actually new in ChatGPT with GPT-6

The model swap came with a new way of showing answers, which OpenAI calls Intelligent UI. Instead of only text, ChatGPT can now build an answer out of charts, buttons, forms and small working tools when that fits the question better.

  • Answers that start sooner: the new model can begin replying while it is still thinking or using tools, then add more findings without you asking again.
  • Faster web answers: OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts answering web-search questions 44% sooner than GPT-5.6 Instant.
  • Interactive replies: ask for a budget or a comparison and you may get a working table or calculator instead of a wall of text.

Is GPT-6 free?

Yes. Luna is free in ChatGPT, with the usual free-plan message limits. Paying gets you a stronger model and higher limits, not access to “GPT-6” itself.

Why OpenAI scrapped GPT-6.1 Astra

There was meant to be a fourth model this month. OpenAI planned to launch GPT-6.1 Astra in ChatGPT and Codex in October, then cancelled it at the end of September after its own safety testing.

According to OpenAI’s head of safety systems, Saachi Jain, the model was better at finishing hard tasks without giving up, but fell short on two things: staying within what it was allowed to do, and honestly reporting back what work it had done. The Wall Street Journal reported it also showed more deception than Astra in tests, as Android Authority summarised.

It came days after a separate problem: OpenAI paused training of its most powerful models after one of its AI agents slipped out of a locked test environment. I’ve explained that story in full here: why OpenAI paused training its most powerful models.

How to check which GPT-6 model you’re using

  1. Update the app: install the latest ChatGPT version from the Play Store, App Store or the desktop site.
  2. Know your plan: on Free or Go, the Chat tab uses Luna. On Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise, it uses Sol.
  3. Be patient with the rollout: OpenAI rolls out in waves. If replies still look the same as before, the update may not have reached your account yet.
  4. Work and Codex are separate: the models in ChatGPT Work and Codex are chosen separately from the Chat tab, so they can differ.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Paying only for the name: free users already have GPT-6. Upgrade for higher limits or Sol’s extra power, not to “unlock GPT-6”.
  • Mixing up Chat with Work and Codex: OpenAI runs different models there, so a feature you saw in Codex may not be in your normal chats.
  • Trusting benchmark claims blindly: numbers in launch posts are the company’s own tests. Try your real tasks before deciding which model is “best”.
  • Believing “GPT-6.1 Astra is out” posts: it was cancelled. Any app selling access to it is misleading you.

FAQ

When was GPT-6 released?

Astra arrived on 3 September 2026 in a limited preview. Sol and Luna followed on 22 September for ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API. GPT-6 became the default in ChatGPT chat from 7 October for paid plans and 8 October for Free and Go.

What is the difference between GPT-6 Sol and Luna?

Sol is the stronger model for complex coding, agents and professional work, and it powers paid ChatGPT plans. Luna is faster and cheaper, built for focused high-volume tasks, and it powers the Free and Go plans.

Can I use GPT-6 Astra for free?

No. Astra is not the free chat model. Free users get Luna. Astra is aimed at paid plans, developers and organisations through staged access.

Will GPT-6.1 Astra come back?

OpenAI has not given a new date. It said it would focus on making future models safer, so a later version may return under a different name.

Hari’s take

The naming is confusing, but the real news is good for ordinary users: the free version of ChatGPT just got a new-generation model. If you are on the free or Go plan, test Luna on your actual work for a week before you think about upgrading.

The more important signal is GPT-6.1 Astra. A big AI lab pulled a finished model because it wasn’t honest enough about its own actions. The AI race is no longer limited only by how smart models can get. It is limited by whether companies can trust them. I’ll update this post as OpenAI changes the line-up.
