Gemini Gems become skills on Google’s schedule, starting 17 November 2026. Gemini Gems, the custom mini-assistants you may have built since 2024, are being replaced by Gemini skills. Your Gems keep working for a few weeks more, then they’re gone. Here are the dates, what moves across automatically, and what you should save today.
Key takeaways
- What: Gemini Gems become skills, reusable instructions you call with a slash in any chat.
- Gemini Gems removal date (personal accounts, 18+): 17 November 2026 for the change, 17 December 2026 for removal, according to the reporting on Google’s help page.
- Workspace: business and nonprofit accounts keep Gems until March 2027; education until June 2027.
- Files: audio, video, GitHub files, old Office formats and archives don’t move. Save them now.
- Still missing from Gemini skills: sharing, Google Drive files and Gemini Notebook sources, which Google says arrive “in the coming weeks”.

What is a Gemini Gem, and what is a Gemini Skill?
A Gem is a saved version of Gemini with its own instructions and files, which you open from a side panel. Think of it as a custom assistant you hire for one job. A Skill is the same kind of saved instruction set, but it works inside any chat. You type / and the skill name, and Gemini applies it to your message.
Google’s Gemini Apps help page lists three reasons to switch: skills are easy to call, Gemini can apply them on its own when they fit, and you can stack several in one chat.
Gem vs Skill: what changes
| Feature | Gem | Skill |
|---|---|---|
| Where you use it | Its own page, from the side panel | Any chat, with / |
| Combine with others | No | Yes, several in one chat |
| Chats per item | Dedicated list | Shown in the side panel |
| Active limit | Not published | 100 active at a time |
| Canvas, Deep Research, Create video, Create music, Guided learning | Supported as default tools | Not yet supported |
Gemini Gems removal date by account
The Gemini Gems migration dates depend on the type of account. Google’s Workspace Updates post and its help pages set the schedule. Two things differ between sources, and I’ve marked them.
| Account | What happens |
|---|---|
| Personal, 18 and over | 17 Nov 2026: change begins · 17 Dec 2026: removal (per third-party reports of the help page) |
| Personal, under 18 | No date yet |
| Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit | No sooner than 1 March 2027 |
| Workspace education | No sooner than 1 June 2027 |
Conflict to know about: Google’s Workspace post says that on 17 November Gems move to the Settings panel, “but users can continue to create, edit, and use them”. Two independent guides say the Gems become read-only that day. Both can be true for different account types, but the personal-account rule is still unclear, so don’t rely on it. Save your Gems now.
What moves when Gemini Gems become skills?
Google says it will recreate your Gemini Gems as skills automatically, along with the supported knowledge files. Each skill can hold up to 100 MB. If a Gem is bigger, Google removes the largest files first until it fits.
- Doesn’t move: GitHub files, audio, video, .doc, .xls and .ppt files, and archives such as .zip or .7z.
- Moves: text, PDFs and images, which skills accept today.
Google’s advice is to download any files that matter before the Gemini Gems removal date. A word of caution: a file moving across does not mean it still says what you want. Check the content as well as the names.
How to recreate a Gemini Gem as a skill yourself
You don’t have to wait for the Gemini Gems migration. Recreating a Gem early also lets you test Gemini skills now. Google’s help page gives this route on gemini.google.com:
- Open the Gem, click Edit, and download every file under “Knowledge”. Put them in a folder named in lowercase with hyphens, such as
sample-skill-name. - In Settings, open Skills, click Create manually, and paste in the Gem’s name, description and instructions. Click Create.
- If the skill needs files, download the skill as a .zip, move its SKILL.md into your folder, then use Replace skill to upload the whole folder. The folder name must match the skill name.
Test the new skill on a real task before you rely on it. Give it one ordinary prompt and one incomplete one, such as notes with no deadline. A good skill says “not supplied” rather than guessing.
Who can use Gemini skills, and is it free?
Google’s help page says skills are available to people over 18 signed in to a personal Google Account, and that work and school accounts will follow. PCWorld reports that skills won’t be paywalled. But AI Weekly reports that creating skills is limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. I couldn’t confirm the paid-only claim on Google’s own pages, so treat it as unverified until Google says so.
What Gemini skills can’t do yet
- Sharing: you can’t share a skill with other people yet. Google says this comes “in the coming weeks”.
- Drive and Notebook files: not yet. Gemini Notebook, the renamed NotebookLM, is also on the list.
- Some tools: Canvas, Deep Research, Create video, Create music and Guided learning don’t work with skills yet. A Gem that depends on one of them needs a manual rework.
- Importing: uploading a SKILL.md from another platform works only in the Gemini app on Mac and on gemini.google.com for now.
What it means for India
Most Indian users of Gemini Gems are on personal Google accounts, so the 17 November and 17 December dates likely apply to you. Students using a college Workspace account should check their admin’s schedule, which runs later. For small businesses that built a Gem for invoices, quotes or client replies, the practical step is simple: export the instructions and your files this month, then recreate the skill before December.
What happens next with Gemini Gems become skills
- Now: download Gem files and copy each Gem’s instructions into a text file.
- 17 November: personal-account Gems change status. I’ll update this post with what the account actually shows.
- 17 December: personal Gemini Gems are scheduled for removal.
- March and June 2027: Workspace business and education dates.

What we don’t know yet
- Whether Gems on personal accounts become read-only or stay usable from 17 November.
- Whether creating skills needs a paid AI plan.
- Whether all Gems convert cleanly. Some users have reported worries about failed conversions, but I found no confirmed case.
- When sharing and Drive support arrive for skills.
FAQ
Will my Gemini Gems become skills automatically?
Yes. Google says the Gemini Gems become skills automatically, along with supported files. Removal of personal-account Gems is listed for 17 December 2026, so download what you need before then.
How do I use Gemini skills?
Type / and the skill name in any Gemini chat. Gemini can also apply a skill on its own when it fits your message.
Can I use several skills at once?
Yes. You can stack several skills in one chat, and you can have up to 100 active at a time.
Do Gemini skills work with Workspace?
Skills in Workspace rolled out from 5 October 2026 and don’t sync with the Gemini app. You create a skill separately on each.
Hari’s take
The idea is good. Gemini Gems become skills for a reason. A skill you can call in any chat and stack with others is more useful than a Gem tucked in a side panel. The problem is the timing: the dates are close, the sources disagree, and the features people relied on, like Canvas and Drive files, aren’t there yet. Save your instructions this month, then decide.
